What is Generic Clomid (Clomiphene)?

It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), used mainly in female infertility due to anovulation (e.g. due to polycystic ovary syndrome). In some countries, it is also registered for use in men.

What is Generic Clomid (Clomiphene) used for?

Generic Clomid (Clomiphene) is used to treat women who have an ovulation problem by stimulating the ovaries to mature an egg. It is a good first choice drug when a woman's ovaries are capable of functioning normally and when her hypothalamus and pituitary are also capable of producing their hormones. In short, the woman's reproductive engine is in working order, but needs some revving up.

Generic Clomid (Clomiphene) may also be used for other conditions in both females and males as determined by your doctor.

Generic Clomid (Clomiphene) Facts

Active Ingredients: clomifene citrate
Other Ingredients: corn starch, lactose, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized cornstarch, and sucrose.
Class and Mechanism:
Clomiphene citrate is capable of interacting with estrogen-receptor-containing tissues, including the hypothalamus, pituitary, ovary, endometrium, vagina, and cervix. It may compete with estrogen for estrogen-receptor-binding sites and may delay replenishment of intracellular estrogen receptors. Clomiphene citrate initiates a series of endocrine events culminating in a preovulatory gonadotropin surge and subsequent follicular rupture. The first endocrine event in response to a course of clomiphene therapy is an increase in the release of pituitary gonadotropins. This initiates steroidogenesis and folliculogenesis, resulting in growth of the ovarian follicle and an increase in the circulating level of estradiol. Following ovulation, plasma progesterone and estradiol rise and fall as they would in a normal ovulatory cycle.

How to take Generic Clomid (Clomiphene):

The dose of Generic Clomid (Clomiphene) will be different for different patients It is is usually started at a dose of 50 mg (one tablet) per day starting on the third, fourth, or fifth day of the menstrual cycle. This dose is continued for a total of five days. It is very important to be monitored by ultrasound while taking Generic Clomid (Clomiphene) to determine if in fact the medication is effective. If it is not effective, the dose may be increased to 100 or 150 mg If ovulation occurs on a dose of Generic Clomid (Clomiphene), there is usually no benefit to increasing the dose in a subsequent cycle. In fact, increasing the dose of Generic Clomid (Clomiphene) could increase the incidence of side effects with no increase in efficacy.
When OVERDOSE is suspected contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, flushing, blurred vision, and stomach pain.
