What is Generic Neurontin (Gabapentin)?

Generic Neurontin (gabapentin) is a prescription drug used in the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) and partial seizures in adults and children.

What is Generic Neurontin (Gabapentin) used for?

Generic Neurontin has two uses. First, it may be prescribed with other medications to treat partial seizures (the type in which symptoms are limited). It can be used whether or not the seizures eventually become general and result in loss of consciousness.
Second, it can be used to relieve the burning nerve pain that sometimes persists for months or even years after an attack of shingles (herpes zoster).

Generic Neurontin (Gabapentin) Facts

Active Ingredients: gabapentin. Other Ingredients: lactose, cornstarch, and talc. Class and Mechanism: Generic Neurontin is related to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurochemical that possesses inhibitory properties. In brain cells, these inhibitory actions prevent excitatory electrical impulses from spreading to neighboring cells. As a result, Neurontin probably prevents the spread of abnormal excitatory activity in the brain at least in part, by mimicking the actions of GABA. By preventing excitatory communication between cells, Neurontin may also inhibit the electrical impulses involved in pain conduction. This may account for the drug's ability to alleviate pain, especially nerve pain.

Generic Neurontin (Gabapentin) Storage

To store this medicine: keep out of the reach of children; store away from heat and direct light; do not store the capsule or tablet forms of this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places; heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down.
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.

How to take Generic Neurontin (Gabapentin)?

Take Neurontin capsules or tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the capsules or tablets with a drink of water. If Neurontin upsets your stomach, take it with food or milk. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
If your prescriber directs you to break the 600 or 800 mg tablets in half as part of your dose, the extra half tablet should be used for the next dose. If you have not used the extra half tablet within 3 days, it should be thrown away.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
When Neurontin is used along with other therapies for managing epileptic partial seizures, improvements should be observed within 12 weeks. On the other hand, pain relief may be evident within one week when the drug is used for pain associated with herpes infections.
Recommended dosage:
For adults, the initial dose of Neurontin is 300 mg taken by mouth three times each day. The dosage may be increased if necessary. Dosages as high as 800–1,200 mg three times daily have been well tolerated.
In children three to 12 years of age, the starting dose should be 10–15 mg/2.2 lb (1 kg)/day given in three equal doses. This dose can be increased until an effective dosage is reached, typically 25–40 mg/2.2 lb (1 kg)/day. Lower dosages are required for patients that have kidney disease.
If OVERDOSE: Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical treatment immediately. Symptoms of Generic Neurontin overdose may include: diarrhea, double vision, drowsiness, lethargy, slurred speech.

What to do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is less than 4 hours until your next dose, do not take the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not allow more than 12 hours to go by between doses. If this happens, call your doctor right away. Do not double doses.

Who should not take Generic Neurontin (Gabapentin)?

Do not take Generic Neurontin if you are allergic to gabapentin, any other medications, or any of the inactive ingredients in the type of gabapentin you plan to take. Ask your pharmacist for a list of the inactive ingredients.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney disease, if you are having surgery, including dental surgery.
You should know that this medication may make you drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
If you are giving gabapentin to your child, you should know that your child's behavior and mental abilities may change while he or she is taking gabapentin. Your child may have sudden changes in mood, become hostile or hyperactive, have difficulty concentrating or paying attention, or be drowsy or clumsy. Have your child avoid activities that could be dangerous, such as riding a bicycle, until you know how gabapentin affects him or her.
Remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this medication.
FOR WOMEN: The effects of Neurontin on pregnant women have not been adequately studied, although birth defects have occurred in babies whose mothers took an antiepileptic medication while they were pregnant. The drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor immediately. This medication may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. It should be used by mothers who nurse their babies only if its benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
